Filament comparison: properties, printing requirements and application ideas
MaterialClassificationMain properties & differencesPrinting & limitationsUses & application examples
PLAGeneral-purpose · rigidEasy to print; crisp detail. Lower heat resistance than ABS or ASA.Beginner-friendly. Avoid hot environments and sun-heated vehicle interiors.Visual prototypes, architectural models, display pieces.
PETGGeneral-purpose · toughLess brittle than standard PLA; useful balance of toughness and printability.Dry when needed; tune retraction to reduce stringing.Protective covers, organisers, functional prototypes.
ABSEngineering · rigidGood impact and heat resistance; less suitable for prolonged UV exposure than ASA.Enclosure and suitable ventilation; control shrinkage and warping.Housings, handles, indoor mechanical prototypes.
ASAEngineering · outdoorABS-like performance with better UV and weather resistance.Enclosure recommended. Check the grade’s heat limit for UAE outdoor use.Outdoor sensor housings, signage mounts, exterior covers.
TPUElastomer · flexibleBends and recovers; absorbs impacts. Shore hardness indicates how firm the grade is.Dry filament; controlled feed and speed. Check feeder compatibility.Protective bumpers, flexible grips, vibration pads.
PVASupport · water-solubleTemporary support material; dissolves after printing.Keep very dry. Requires a compatible multi-material process and build material.Removable supports for cavities and complex overhangs.
PA6Engineering · nylonWear-resistant; CF/GF grades add stiffness. Moisture changes dimensions and performance.Thorough drying and dry storage; wear-resistant nozzle for reinforced grades.Jigs, fixtures, loaded brackets, mechanical components.
PA12Engineering · nylonGenerally absorbs less moisture than PA6; useful for dimensional consistency.Still requires drying. CF/GF versions need a wear-resistant nozzle.Precision fixtures, durable housings, mechanical prototypes.
PCEngineering · polycarbonateHigh toughness and good heat resistance; more demanding than PLA or PETG.Dry filament, high-temperature capability and controlled enclosure.Robust housings, tool components, functional brackets.
PC-ABSEngineering · polymer blendCombines PC and ABS; balances impact resistance, heat performance and processing.Enclosed printer and grade-specific settings; drying recommended.Equipment housings, instrument panels, assembly prototypes.
PET · CF gradesEngineering · reinforced polyesterCatalogued PET-CF grades prioritise stiffness and dimensional stability; distinct from PETG.Drying and a wear-resistant nozzle; use the grade’s thermal profile.Assembly fixtures, rigid tooling, industrial brackets.
PEEKHigh-performance · semi-crystallineExcellent thermal and chemical resistance for demanding engineering applications.Specialist high-temperature printer; controlled chamber and crystallisation.High-temperature tooling, chemical-process components.
PEI · ULTEM™ 1010High-performance · amorphousHigh heat resistance and dimensional stability; inherently flame-retardant polymer.Specialist heated-chamber printer and drying; printed-part ratings depend on validation.Heat-exposed fixtures, electrical equipment components.

How to read the comparison

Rigid means difficult to bend; tough means resistant to impact. CF = carbon fibre; GF = glass fibre. Reinforcement often improves stiffness, but does not automatically improve impact strength or bonding between layers.

These are material-family guidelines and application ideas, not guaranteed part specifications. Results depend on the grade, moisture, print orientation and settings. Check the manufacturer’s technical data sheet (TDS), especially for heat, outdoor exposure or loaded parts.
