iNLASE

Laser Aligner Milling Machine for Orthodontic Production

The iNLASE system is a specialized laser-based milling machine designed for automated trimming of orthodontic clear aligners. Developed by ORTHOiN3D, a French Medtech company, this equipment addresses the final stage of in-house aligner fabrication. The process of cutting thermoformed plastic sheets around 3D-printed dental models is fully automated, which removes variability introduced by manual methods.

Production Workflow Integration

The iNLASE operates as a central component within a digital laboratory chain. It accepts models produced by any resin 3D printer using DLP, SLA, or MSLA technologies. Thermoforming systems and plates from different suppliers are also compatible, provided the aligner material thickness does not exceed 1 mm.

The machine uses a tray system that holds up to six thermoformed models simultaneously. Loading uses friction retention on repositioning pins, eliminating screw-based fastening.

Laser Cutting Performance

Cutting speed reaches approximately 20 to 25 seconds per aligner, depending on the geometric complexity of the 3D model and the designed cutting line. A full tray of six aligners completes in about 2.5 minutes. Daily production capacity can reach up to 1,000 aligners. The laser source is a Class IV CO₂ system operating at 10.6 μm wavelength. This non-contact cutting method generates a smooth edge surface across the thermoplastic material. In many cases, no manual polishing or edge correction is required, although final cleaning and decontamination must follow the manufacturer’s protocol.

CO₂ Laser Quality

Thanks to its 10.6 µm wavelength, the iNLASE® produces perfectly smooth, biocompatible edges. The thermal effect eliminates the need for manual polishing after cutting.

“CLIC” Ergonomics

Forget complicated clamping mechanisms. The models are secured by simple friction on repositioning pins, ensuring ultra-fast, error-free loading.

Operational Safety and Maintenance

An internal fume extraction and filtration system is included. The machine must be connected to an external air extraction system or vented directly outside the office or laboratory. The CO₂ laser tube has a limited operational life, typically between 2 and 5 years depending on usage intensity. Regular cleaning of optical components such as lenses and mirrors is required to maintain cutting precision and power.

Software Control: iNPLAN

The iNLASE is controlled by iNPLAN, a SaaS software platform accessible via internet under an annual license. This software manages patient data, production tracking, and cutting line definition. The user can generate semi-automatic cutting line layouts on initial digital models and manually adjust the line for clinical preferences such as elastic notches or button cutouts. iNPLAN then transposes this cutting line automatically across all treatment stages.

The software also prepares positioning bases on 3D models, which allow correct placement of thermoformed models onto the machine tray. iNPLAN imports .PTS format cutline files from most major setup programs.

Clinical and Operational Advantages

Laser cutting produces a smooth edge without mechanical burrs. This reduces the need for post-processing and supports consistent aligner retention. The reproducibility of the cutting path across multiple aligner stages helps maintain uniform force expression during orthodontic treatment. For laboratory and in-office production environments, the automation of trimming reduces manual labor time and supports predictable output volumes.
